When two men have sex with one woman at the same time, the real bond is homoerotic, not heterosexual. The men connect with each other through the woman and use her to secure their own pleasure. In the fall of 1920 Edmund Wilson tried out this kinky arrangement. He fulfilled his sexual fantasies by accepting the proposal of the poet Edna Millay, who suggested that he take the lower half of her body while his close friend John Peale Bishop secures the upper. In the process, they exchanged pleasantries about who had the most delightful portion. Though the possibilities of approaching her from two directions were perversely intriguing, Wilson remained tantalizing vague about exactly how he and Bishop, neither of whom could completely possess Millay, made simultaneous love to her and vicarious love to each other. Such odd threesomes occur in the fiction of Paul Bowles and Yukio Mishima. Both writers had extremely weird and similarly hermetic childhoods. Bowles recalled that "At the age of five I had never yet even spoken to another child or seen children play together. My idea of the world was still that of a place inhabited exclusively by adults" (Conversations with Paul Bowles, ed. Gena Caponi [Jackson: UP of Mississippi, 1993): 186). When Mishima was two months old his imperious grandmother took him away from his parents. He was jealously guarded from the outside world until he was twelve years old and kept prisoner in her darkened sickroom. During his morbid and isolated existence, he was allowed to play only with his older girl cousins.
